Of the several Sabbath-inspired bands on the Hellhound label, Sweden's Count Raven was probably the most representative of the classic doom sound for which Hellhound was renowned. The band comes dangerously close to cloning (especially with the vocals being very Ozzy-like) but in general the songs are strong enough to overlook this. After releasing four albums between 1990 and 1996, a deteriorating working relationship between founder Dan Fondelius and the other two members forced the band to fold in March of 1999. Fondelius went on to form a new band by the name of Doomsday Gouvernment, but little was heard from this band apart from the odd compilation appearance. By the spring of 2006 Count Raven was reported as back in action, with touring plans and possible future recording plans in the works, but by early 2006 dissention again caused a split in the band, this time resulting in Fondelius simply hiring two new members and carrying on as Count Raven. Their new album, Mammons War, very much in the mold of their early work, was released in the summer of 2009.
