The Dutch gothic metal scene continues to produce impressive bands featuring even more impressive female vocalists. Floor Jansen (After Forever) and Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation) made their marks on the scene a few years ago, and now they are joined by Simone Simons of this band, Epica. Speaking of After Forever, Epica was formed by Mark Jansen, who was also the founding member of After Forever, he deciding to leave that band in 2002. The Phantom Agony, Epica's debut album, proves that the band is every bit as good as the aforementioned fellow Dutch bands, featuring wonderfully flawless soprano vocals from Simons (along with the rare male death growl, a nice touch), and rich, majestic classically-influenced symphonic gothic metal. A very well done debut album from a recommended band.
