Iced Earth has reigned as one of the leaders in prime American power metal for several years now. Their career began inauspiciously enough, the self-titled debut drawing middling reviews and dismissed by some as nothing more than an Iron Maiden clone, but by the time of Burnt Offerings and The Dark Saga (released in '95 and '96, respectively), the band had hit their stride, perfecting their brand of classic metal enhanced by epic lyrical subjects that has continued to serve them well. As is often the case with long-running bands, members have come and gone (including some major players such as onetime Judas Priest vocalist "Ripper" Owens and bassist extraordinaire Steve DiGiorgio), but mainman Jon Schaffer has never wavered in his commitment to the cause of traditional heavy metal.

In December 2007 came the stunning news that, after having conversations with Schaffer, former vocalist Matt Barlow was returning to the band. Barlow, who had left the band several years ago to pursue a law enforcement career and who was also recently fronting the Danish band Pyramaze, will sing on the next Iced Earth album, set for an early 2008 release.
