The Melvins are a cult phenomena, an underground band in the truest sense of the word, doing exactly what they want to do, on their own terms, and inspiring tremendous fan loyalty in the process. Formed back in the early 80's, the duo of Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover have been there from the beginning, with the bass position changing hands every few years (two notable early bassists were Matt Lukin, founder of the grunge band Mudhoney, and Lori Black, daughter of none other than Shirley Temple). The Melvins style is unstructured, sludgy, twisted, punk-grunge (they were playing grunge well before it became a fad), with many songs twisting and turning and meandering with little regard for standard song structure. Lyrically they're out there too, as one could gather from a glance at the song titles from any one of their many albums. Most of their career has been spent on smaller indie labels, though at one time they were on a major label (Atlantic), who seemingly had no clue as to how to handle them. At this point of time there seems to be no slowing down for the band. Truly a unique entity in the world of rock music.
Osborne is also part of Fantômas, also featuring ex-Faith No More vocalist Mike Patton and Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo.
