Scar Symmetry is one of those pseudo-side projects, where various members of various bands decide to hook up and form a group that doesn't conflict with their main bands. Modern melodic death metal is the focus here (Soilwork is frequently mentioned as a soundalike), with vocals alternating between very growly death and reasonably melodic clean, some keyboards lending an atmospheric touch, and of course riffing that alternates between death crunchiness and harmonized leads. There's nothing fundamentally wrong here, but overall there isn't a great deal of personality, and the band seems to be straddling the line between a more brutal death approach and a mainstream melodeath style. A decent effort, par for the course and not a bad listen, but not an essential purchase.
