Therion may not have been the first band to fuse operatic singing in metal, but Christofer Johnsson's crew is generally regarded as the standard bearer in the field, ever since he first toyed with the idea on Lepaca Kliffoth in 1995. Gradually the opera singing became less of a background novelty, to the point that Johnsson himself stopped singing altogether and now employs various guest singers, both from the opera and metal worlds. Since that time Therion has remarkably maintained a high standard of quality, with ambitious releases such as the twin album collection of Lemuria/Sirius B and the new double-CD effort Gothic Kaballah.

Johnsson announced in April 2008 that he was splitting from the other members of the band, intending to continue Therion with a new lineup.

Upcoming release:  Sitra Ahra, due September 2010.
