Agalloch

Hailing from Oregon, and with ties to fellow The End artists
Sculptured,
Agalloch have a real winner on their hands with
Pale Folklore,
a sort of laidback, atmospheric post-black metal album, if that
makes sense.
Others have pointed to bands such as
Opeth (the quieter moments) or mid-period
Katatonia as sound-alikes, and to a point these comparisons are
valid, as Agalloch shares the former's tendency for drawn-out
compositions and the latter's general moodiness.
But these are merely vague reference points, as
Agalloch has crafted a unique and original style, blending
mostly harsh semi-black vocals, acoustic passages, thoughtful
lyrics, and a general feeling of darkness and melancholy that
is just plain cool to listen to.
Following a pre-Folklore EP of material released as
Of Stone, Wind And Pillor,
the band's second album, The Mantle,
was released in 2002.
Somewhat more laidback and mellow than Folklore, but otherwise
retaining much of the moodiness and flow from that album,
The Mantle is a fine followup from a band who still have untapped
potential to explore.
An excellent band.
