The Agonist  

Montreal metalcore here, with a band who signed to Century Media for their 2007 debut album, Once Only Imagined. The star of the show here is clearly vocalist Alyssa White-Gluz, who's getting all sorts of attention for her looks, her social and political views, and her voice (a pretty fair clean voice as well as a nasty hardcore snarl). Extreme female vocalists aren't quite as rare as some seem to think, though there are those who still want to make a big deal about it ("A girl who screams? Wow!") -- nevertheless, Alyssa holds her own here. Musically Once Only Imagined is relatively standard metalcore, with a fair amount of bite from guitarist Danny Marino backed by a capable rhythm section, though really this band will only go as far as White-Gluz takes them. On a purely musical level, The Agonist isn't quite unique enough to rise above a still-crowded metalcore scene, but Imagined is a solid debut effort.
