Altar Of Oblivion

This Danish group put out a well-received demo in 2007 before signing with the up-and-coming Shadow Kingdom label for their debut, Sinews Of Anguish. This is the embodiment of doom metal -- not doomdeath, not funeral doom, just epic doom, traditionally dark, slow, and heavy. The vocals, by one Mik Mentor, lend a touch of uniqueness, as his operatic, majestic tones play off the doomy riffs perfectly. It's hard to find fault here -- sure, this isn't the most modern of styles, and the band are content to stay within the boundaries of the genre rather than expanding them, but their execution is pretty much flawless.
