Brand New Sin

Hailing from Syracuse, New York, Brand New Sin have won many outstanding reviews from American journalists, many of whom seem to be lamenting the flood of nu-metal bands out there and looking for something fresh and yet reminiscient of the good old days of hard rock. True enough, these guys do stand out from the pack of nu-metal clone bands, their album a breath of fresh air even though it itself isn't the most original album ever recorded. Gritty hard metal is on display here, with influences from the likes of Corrosion Of Conformity, Down, and Black Label Society to name three, along with an occasional Southern rock vibe as well. Vocalist Joe Altier has a husky voice, a cross between Zakk Wylde and Phil Anselmo, perfectly suited to this style of metal, and with three guitarists on display, one can be assured of plenty tasteful solos and harmony leads. Brand New Sin isn't revolutionary, but frankly there aren't many bands playing this style at all, and for keeping the flame of plain old heavy rock alive, their accolades are deserved.
