Bow Wow  


The oldest of all Japanese metal bands, Bow Wow formed in 1975 and by the early eighties had become a popular band in their home country, though they were virtually unknown elsewhere. Though their earlier material was decidely hard rock and a shade poppy at times, they were unquestionably a prime influence on Loudness and the other Japanese bands that would emerge in the eighties, and guitarist Kyoji Yamamoto was quite an accomplished heavy rock guitarist. Intent on reaching Western audiences, the band modified their name in 1984 to Vow Wow, at least in part due to the presence of British pop band Bow Wow Wow. During the rest of the eighties, the Vow Wow maintained residence in England and in fact featured noted Whitesnake bassist Neil Murray in the lineup for a time. The band broke up in the early nineties, but in 1995 Kyoji Yamamoto put together a new version of the band, now back as Bow Wow, and had recorded as late as 2002. As with most Japanese bands, information on them is difficult to come by -- as of this writing, it's not clear if they're still around.
