Dissection
Dissection is heralded as one of the founders of the so-called
Gothenburg sound, which basically adds a melodic touch (often in
the form of Maiden-ish twin guitar riffs) to death metal.
Both of their albums are regarded as death metal classics, with
Storm Of The Light's Bane getting the nod as the better of the
two.
Though the band's popularity was still rising, by 1997 internal
strife amongst the band members led to most of the band leaving the
band for one reason or another (two of them, Johan Norman
and Tobias Kellgren, eventually formed
Soulreaper),
leaving founder
Jon Nödtveidt bandless.
Later, in 1998, Nödtveidt was convicted of murder and sentenced
to prison, effectively putting Dissection on indefinite hold.
With Nödtveidt's release in 2004, Dissection was
put back in action.
Former
Emperor
drummer Bard Faust briefly joined Nödtveidt to form the
nucleus of a new lineup, but he left after only a couple of months.
A new lineup eventually stabilized, and the comeback album,
Reinkaos, was released in the spring of 2006.
Rather abruptly, however, the band announced that a concert
in late June would be their last, and later that year (August)
came the sad news that that Nödtveidt had committed suicide,
thus marking the official end of the band.
