Fates Warning  


Along with Dream Theater and Queensryche, Fates Warning is acknowledged as one of the more influential progressive metal bands in existence. The Iron Maiden-ish debut (Night On Brocken) was fine in its own right, but it was the next pair of albums (The Spectre Within and Awaken The Guardian) where the band really took off -- these were monstrous, classic early prog metal masterpieces, with John Arch's unique vocals blending perfectly with the various melodies and time changes. New vocalist Ray Alder stepped in and the band continued with No Exit before adopting a somewhat less progressive, more mainstream style on the next few albums. Former Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore was drafted as a guest for A Pleasant Shade Of Gray, and his presence gave the band a bit more depth as they partially returned to their earlier prog roots. Following the release of their tenth album (the appropriately titled FWX), longtime drummer Mark Zonder decided to step down from the band, as he wished to pursue other interests.
