The bizarre outfit known as Gwar formed in the late 80's by vocalist Dave Brockie (then toiling in a punk band called Death Piggy), who latched on to the idea of incorporating larger-than-life stage props to a live metal show. Within the space of a few years their reputation as one of the most outrageous live acts grew to astronomical proportions. An outlandish, over-the-top affair combining sci-fi, horror, and pornography, their live shows simply cannot be missed. For the most part their live act has overshadowed their music, though the last couple albums in particular show the band improving their unique brand of thrash metal. 2004 sees the release of their first album in three years (and the first for new label DRT), War Party.
