Impaler  

Impaler is a name familiar to many 80's underground metal fans. Much of this Minnesota band's popularity was due to being in the right place at the right time, as their debut EP and album (Rise Of The Mutants* and *If We Had Brains ... We'd Be Dangerous) were among those releases singled out by Tipper Gore and the PMRC as being offensive, which of course meant free publicity for the band. Musically the band isn't really a lot to write home about -- punky, semi-thrashy street metal with lyrics centering on gore and zombies and the like. If We Had Brains sold reasonably well for an indie release but the band was unable to capitalize on its success, and by the end of the eighties enthusiasm for the band had dwindled considerably. Nonetheless, vocalist/founder Bill Lindsey never threw in the towel, and with a varying lineup surrounding him, has released several independent albums (most recently, Old School Ghouls). The band is still active in the Twin Cities area, and their image, if anything, is even more over-the-top than in their heyday.
