Korpiklaani  


The roots of Korpiklaani ("Forest Clan") stretch back to a Finnish band named Shaman (no relation to the Brazilian Shaman), a band steeply rooted in Finnish folk and language (the lyrics were entirely sung in the Sámi language). After two albums, mainman Jonne Järvelä decided a shift in direction was necessary, the goal being to retain the folk roots but with a more increased metal influence. With new members in tow, Shaman became Korpiklaani, and the first album under the new name, Spirit Of The Forest, was released in 2004. Spirit is without a doubt a folk metal album first and foremost, with the violin often driving the songs rather than playing a support role as in other bands. Inevitably Skyclad is the first name practically everyone thinks of when the subject of folk metal comes up, and there are similarities between that band and this one, though Korpiklaani is approaching the style from a different direction. Flutes and accordians also make their presence known here (the latter instrument driving the faster polka-ish songs that occasionally bring Finntroll to mind). Spirit Of The Forest is a fresh and inspired album, one of the better albums under the folk metal banner to appear in some time.
