Ludicra  


Ludicra was formed on Halloween Day in 1998, culling several members of various Bay Area bands. Their take on metal is plainly derived from classic black metal, but their overall sound is, simply put, different, a diverse and intriguing style that is quite exceptional, enough so that they signed to Alternative Tentacles Records, hardly the usual label for a black metal band. They employ two female singers (a relative rarity in itself), with the main style being a pretty vicious black rasp, but there are also clean vocals, in a kind of crooning style (not the angelic soprano vocals often employed). Of the two albums, the latter Another Great Love Song is the better, less reliant on solely black metal and a bit more diverse, though the debut Hollow Psalms is also well done. To put it bluntly, Ludicra have something special here, a sound that is really all their own and wide open for development. Highly recommended.
