A cult Swiss extreme band from the 80's, Messiah generated a pretty healthy following in their early days despite being unsigned, the sales of their first two releases finally prompting them to sign with Noise Records in 1991. The album reviewed here is the debut, 1986's Hymn To Abramelin, arguably the band's most well-known album. The music is rather primitive thrash metal with clear pre-death metal tendencies (death metal had not yet matured then), a bit dated when listened to in 2004 but quite extreme, and no doubt influential, in its time. The band managed several releases over the course of their career, with the curious inclusion of Therion's main main Christofer Johnsson on their final album, Underground.
