Mastery

Kudos to this Canadian quartet for trying something
a bit different.
Thrash metal is nothing new of course, and all-instrumental
bands have made some noise in other genres, but Mastery
might be the first band to effectively combine the two.
Prime thrash circa early nineties is the clear influence here,
with plenty of slashing riffs and solos too to fill the void
where the singer might be.
Yet this is not a solo-oriented or guitar-hero band --
Jeff Dormer is an effective lead guitarist, no question, but
the focus here is on the song and the riff more than the solo.
Considering this is a young band with a debut release,
Lethal Legacy is very well done indeed, a no-brainer
recommendation for anyone into prime thrash metal.
Instrumental bands always have a tough road to hoe,
since for whatever reason finding a target audience
is a bit more difficult -- it will be interesting to see
how far these guys take the instrumental thrash route.
For now, though, it's clear sailing.
Latest reports say that the band is employing a vocalist
(as yet unnamed) for their next album.
