Penumbra

Formed in 1996,
Penumbra is one of the few French bands in the gothic metal
field, with their most recent album,
The Last Bewitchment,
bearing some strong similarities to
Tristania,
particularly when the choir vocals are in full force.
Like Tristania and others, a variety of vocal styles and
instruments are
prevalent, ranging from blackened growls to female sopranos to
the aforementioned choirs, to a tasteful use of the oboe
in several places.
They may be an album away from truly establishing their own
identity, but gothic metal fans will certainly enjoy this band.
