Raven Black Night

Raven Black Night formed in 1999 in Adelaide,
Australia, recording the requisite demo or two
before self-releasing an album,
Choose The Dark,
in 2004.
Several others have noted a strong 70’s influence,
though to these ears the style is more along the lines
of 80’s underground metal, with a slight doom bent
(think, maybe, slower
Manilla Road
crossed with a bit of
Candlemass,
though these guys don’t sound a lot like either band
directly).
The vocals are predominantly a clear,
poor man’s Messiah Marcolin style
(including the occasional classic 80’s wail),
though on “Gothic Black” they switch it up by singing
entirely in a deathish growl, a nice contrast.
A raw but effective production rounds out the package –
this is not slick, contemporary, hi-tech modern metal,
but a clear homage to the 80’s indie scene.
