Riverside came together in 2001 when several players on the Polish scene found they had a common love for progressive metal (while Poland has no shortage of great metal bands, few well-known Polish bands play traditional prog metal). In due time a debut album (Out Of Myself) was released, and a couple of years later (2005) came the followup, Second Life Syndrome. This is a perfect example of a band who draws from several familiar influences in the prog rock/metal world (Dream Theater occasionally, Porcupine Tree and Pain Of Salvation are often mentioned by others as well), yet somehow avoid simply rehashing old ideas. Excellent musicianship abounds here, though this is not a band to overwhelm with overly flashy soloing or complex time changes, as this is a more relaxed form of progressive metal. Mariusz Duda's vocals are spot-on -- clear and melodic without going for high-pitched wails, and he's not afraid to let loose a punctuated roar now and again. Second Life Syndrome is, simply, a well-crafted, elegant, and inspiring progressive rock/metal album, from a band still on the rise. Highly recommended.
