Soilwork  

In the space of a few short years, Soilwork has risen from their initial status of just another Swedish melodic death metal band to their present position as one of the most popular and well-respected bands playing the so-called Gothenburg style. Though their first two albums were fine efforts themselves, it was their third album, 2001's The Predator's Portrait, that really put their name on the map, and their position as leaders in their field was solidified a year later with Natural Born Chaos, an album that topped many fan's and writer's lists for best album of 2002. Now, in 2003, Soilwork takes another step forward with Figure Number Five. Even though their style has not radically altered over the years, and even though the style itself is not terribly unique, Soilwork makes it effective, by maturing and refining their sound with each successive release. They are what modern extreme metal is all about.
