This odd Floridian band has been around for a few years, but their 2008 release (the excellently titled "Meanderthal") has generated a bit of underground buzz, and with good reason. At times their style resembles a cross between stoner metal and sludge doom, but they don't slot in either genre, as they lack the psychedelic edge of the former and the extreme slowness and hateful vocals of the latter. Given the heaviness of the riffs, many of the songs are surprisingly upbeat, due perhaps to the shortness of the songs and the clear vocals. Elsewhere the term "sludge-pop" has been used to describe this band, and that's probably not too far off the mark -- they can be quite heavy one moment, but catchy and accessible the next. An interesting band, and one to keep an eye on.
