Viking Crown

Viking Crown was one of the seemingly countless
Phil Anselmo projects that
he occupied his time with during
Pantera
down times, this one also featuring his now ex-wife Opal.
If nothing else, at least all of his projects don't sound like
his main band, unlike many artists whose solo works sound just
his/her regular band.
Viking Crown was Anselmo's venture into the extreme harsh forms
of early minimalist black metal.
Almost ambient at times, the deliberately poorly produced songs
were at times quite disturbing and evil sounding, bleak
soundscapes of harsh noise, quite characteristic of the early
Norwegian bands such as
Darkthrone.
There are traces of interest here, but the poor sound quality
was really a detriment, and it's clear this was done more to
satisfy the member's needs rather than appeal to any real
audience.
Anselmo fans would be better served listening to
Down or
Superjoint Ritual.
