Aenaon
Avant-garde is a somewhat nebulous term that is thrown about
frequently when describing bands living the edge, or in their
world doing their own thing.
On 2016's
Hypnosophy
Greece's Aenaon fit the bill, the title itself seemingly an
ideal title for an avant-garde album, and the first
hint of something different on the way, that something being
an experimental form of modern black metal.
And when you employ a saxophonist as a full-time member, you
know you're in for something off the wall.
The venerable Angry Metal Guy site correctly namechecks two bands
that provide clues to Aenaon's style, those being
Sigh
and fellow Greeks
Hail Spirit Noir,
as, like Aenaon,
both are vaguely rooted in some sort of black metal
but really know their way around an oddball riff, and
in the former case saxes are also in the mix.
The weirdness continues on their similarly-styled followup effort,
2022's
Mnemosyne.
