Aska

These Texans formed in 1990 and from the get-go decided to buck the then-current trend of alternative/grunge and dive straight into 80's US power metal worship. Touring extensively with no label support, they recorded four albums and an EP from 1994 to 2000, all independently released, while since then they've been less prolific, with an album in 2007 and the album reviewed here, 2013's Fire Eater, put out by the german Pure Steel label. Fire Eater basically draws influences from the best of the US bands of the eighties, bands like Jag Panzer, Helstar, Armored Saint, and others. It's a solid album, short on originality but a bit more diverse then others in this field, with additions like a fine rendition of Judas Priest's "The Ripper" breaking a bit from the norm. A sore thumb is "Year Of Jubilee", which is a sappy Euro symphonic melodic power metal tune and thus quite out of place here. Overall, Fire Eater quite nicely answers the call for traditional 80's power metal.
