Bereavement
Bereavement is an impressive new band from Pennsylvania,
initially consisting of a trio of brothers (a fourth member has
has since joined).
Their debut album,
The Advent Of Loss, is quite an
undertaking, made all the more impressive in that the band
is unsigned and the album was completely self-financed.
Musically, the guys operate in a sort of progressive, melodic
doom-death world --
Opeth
is a clear influence (general mood, and also the tendency to
intersperse acoustic passages throughout the songs),
yet they are by no means just a copy.
There's also a fair bit of doom and some progressive stylings
as well, and a faint air of melancholy pervades throughout,
befitting both band and album names.
Vocally, Jonathan alternates between an extremely low death
growl and a more blackened rasp -- they are not the high
point of the band, but nor do they detract from the music.
A minor criticism of
Loss might be that,
while the style is varied and
distinctive in itself, the songs tend to run together and lack
individual memorability
(though this could be said for any number of bands, young
or not).
Still, this is indeed a quality debut, and it should not be long
before this band is signed somewhere -- they definitely
deserve a chance at the next level.
