Baroness

Baroness is a tough nut to crack. Their style has been tagged as progressive sludge, an odd marriage of two quite disparate styles, yet the label fits as well as any. They seem to share some similarities with two other standout Georgian bands in Mastodon and Kylesa, as all three began life a bit more in the hard-edged sludge category (thick guitars, husky semi-shouted vocals) before broadening and expanding their style, with Baroness possibly being the most progressive and experimental of the three. They've suffered their fair share of misfortune, most notably a well-publicized 2012 bus crash in England, causing injuries serious enough to force the then-current rhythm section to depart a year later. With that finally behind them, they released arguably their most well-received album, Purple in 2015.

Recent album: Stone, released on September 15, 2023.
