Direwolf

Direwolf is a one-man project headed up by Mike Lerner, who also plays guitar in the extremely technical instrumental band Behold The Arctopus. Here, he does it all (vocals, instruments, programming), blending black metal, technical progressive metal, and a sci-fi storyline to create a pretty unique album, one that apparently was seven years in the making. At times, the style leans to black metal with a progressive edge, at other times (maybe a bit more often) it sounds more like sped-up progressive metal with harsh vocals. Either way, it's a rather unique style, and kudos to Lerner for attempting it. Overall, this is more focused than Arctopus, with songs like "1,000,000 Enemis" almost qualifying as catchy (not poppy by any stretch, but containing a riff/hook that instantly lodges itself into the listener's brain), yet Lerner's technical side shines through as well, with some well-placed solos and complex riffs sprinkled throughout. This is unquestionably recommended to tech/prog fans, but black/extreme metal fans should also take a liking to this.
