Galneryus

For whatever reason, Japan has not produced a lot of power metal bands even though the style is popular there. Concerto Moon does come to mind, and Galneryus is another, both in the neoclassical mold but with a decidedly European influence. Flag Of Punishment, released in 2003, displays the sort of speedy, upbeat power metal that has been a staple in Europe for several years now, with the requisite melodic vocals and flashy fretwork that fans of Yngwie Malmsteen and the like thirst for. Really, these guys offer nothing new or different to the genre, but they do possess some major chops, with the guitarist and keyboardist both deserving of praise for some impressive musicianship displays. Lyrically, well, English grammar is clearly not the band's strong suit, judging from song titles such as "Beyond Of The Ground" and "Child Of Free", though that's not likely to be a problem to listeners. Even though there's nothing innovative here, this is a professional and mature band that deserves a listen for those into solid neoclassical power metal.
