Jaldaboath
Jaldaboath (the band) is one of several ventures involving James Fogarty,
who first gained notoriety as co-founder of
The Meads Of Asphodel,
where he went by the stage name Jaldaboath.
He's also had a long-running solo project by the name of
Ewigkeit,
and has recently been seen in the excellent
In The Woods ....
Here, he goes in a quite different direction.
The band themselves state that they "combine an intoxicating mix of
metal, Middle Ages, and Monty Python".
It turns out that this description is completely accurate, though
it's unlikely that any preconceived notions of their sound won't match
their actual music -- you have to hear this to believe it, so to speak.
They released an EP (
Hark The Herald) in 2008 and a full-length album
(
The Rise Of The Heraldic Beasts) two years later,
(most of the EP was either re-released or re-recorded here),
and finally
The Further Adventures in 2014.
So, the music is quite folky and medieval-inspired, yet quite metallic
in its own odd way.
There are faint comparisons to Fogarty's aforementioned previous bands,
but they are fleeting at best.
Some of the songs are downright rollicking ("Jaldaboath",
"Bash The Bishop"), while others
such as "Da Vinci's Code", with a more gruff vocal style, shows a darker
side of the band.
With titles like "Axe Wielding Nuns", it's clear these guys aren't to be
taken seriously, and that's exactly the point.
Renaissance Faire metal, anyone?
