Liquid Tension Experiment

Liquid Tension Experiment pairs bassist extraordinaire Tony Levin (King Crimson, plus a ton of session and solo work) with three Dream Theater guys in an instrumental band, and the result is exactly what one would expect -- fusion-y prog rock/metal of the highest order, with standout musicianship all around. They recorded two albums in quick succession in 1998 and 1999, while the third effort didn't come out until 2021. Jam sessions from the second album were released under the amusing title of Liquid Trio Experiment, so called because John Petrucci was forced to miss studio time.
