This Norwegian progressive metal band has been racking up solid
reviews for their 2011 release Bilateral, and those accolades are
well-deserved.
This is superb progressive metal, drawing in several familiar influences
but fusing them so that there's not a trace of cloning.
Think
Pain Of Salvation,
Riverside,
Dream Theater
(of course, but not as much as a lot of other prog bands),
even newer
Opeth
at times.
Fancy musicianship and odd time signatures are here, but this isn't
wild, incomprehensible tech metal -- the songs are defined and
supremely interesting.
Bands like this,
that push boundaries and forge truly original paths,
don't grow on trees -- Leprous are practically in a class
by themselves.
As an interesting side note, these guys serve as the live backing band
for none other than
Ihsahn.
Recent album: Melodies Of Atonement,
released on August 30, 2024.
