Lich King

Here we have another band piling on the retro thrash bandwagon, a vehicle seemingly about ready to collapse under its own weight. By the band's own admission, retro thrash is nothing new, it's all been done before (and better) 25 years ago and these guys are just another band thrashing about with wild abandon just for the fun of it. And so Lich King takes the familiar influences, both from the Bay Area side a la old Exodus as well as some early Germanic stylings and perhaps a bit of hardcore-ish moments reminiscient of a Stormtroopers Of Death, and attempts to put their own spin on things. With song titles like "Black Metal Sucks" and "Cheesy Metal Intro", the boys are even less reverent and serious than their compatriots, which may or may not work against them (as has been said before, humor and metal rarely mix successfully), while musically they pull off the speedier numbers well enough. The production, at least on Toxic Zombie Onslaught, leaves a bit to be desired, it's a bit tinny and vocal-heavy, a minor distraction though not a deal-breaker. No doubt the band will run its course in due time and leave a legacy of decent retro thrash in its wake. Amusingly, the 2011 release Super Retro Thrash is a collection of "8-bit, NES-style adaptations of some of our songs".
