Nightwish

Nightwish is unquestionably Finland's most popular metal band, as their symphonic, classically-influenced power metal has reigned supreme in Europe almost since their first album's release in 1997. And while they may or may not have been the first band to employ an operatic soprano as lead vocalist, they definitely were one of the earlier and more successful bands to do so, thanks to the peerless vocals of one Tarja Turunen. A truely opera-trained vocalist, her crystal-clear voice was a joy and a wonder to behold, and her performances remain the standard by which all others are measured. But the band parted ways with Tarja in 2005 amid much controversy, citing business and personal differences. Anette Olzon, from the Swedish AOR band Alyson Avenue, was eventually hired as the new singer after an exhaustive search, and she lasted until 2012, when she too was removed from the band. After another long search, noted After Forever frontwoman Floor Jansen was brought in to assume the reins. Stylistically, the band really hasn't wavered much from one album to the next, sticking true to a sound that has clearly served them well.
