Ogre

Ogre formed in 1999 and released three albums from 2003 to 2008, showing a penchant for wandering off the beaten path at times (not many bands write 37-minute, single-track albums these days, but that's what Ogre did with Plague Of The Planet). They broke up in 2009, briefly reunited in 2012 and a year later reformed, eventually releasing the album reviewed here, The Last Neanderthal. The overall pace of the album points to doom metal, and while Sabbath is of course an influence, this takes a right turn from the Candlemasses of the world, as this sounds far more influenced by 70's hard rock than more modern doom metal bands. Choosing to cover a song by a 70's band also called Ogre is a nice humorous touch, and doesn't sound out of place here. There's a lot to like about Ogre, and while it's clear at this point in their career that they aren't going to be rock superstars, they seem quite content doing their own thing.
