Praxis

Far less of a band than a project, Praxis was the brainchild of producer Bill Laswell, whose lengthy career is outside the scope of this page. Two of the core members here do have some metallic ties, most notably the star of the show, enigmatic guitar hero Buckethead (most recently seen playing in Guns'n'Roses), with former Primus drummer Brian "Brain" Mantia also serving time here. For the traditionally metal-minded who are curious as to what this sounds like, Praxis is a risky bet -- there's very little in the way of conventional metal, but there is plenty of flashy guitarwork from Buckethead, alongside healthy doses of funk, electronica, sampling, and just plain weirdness. Music like this takes an enormous amount of patience to get through it all, and some will likely find it all just a bit much. A fringe band at best when metal is the subject, but a bizarre and unique entity nonetheless.
