Rail
Rail is best known for winning a national MTV battle-of-the-bands
competition in 1983, the prize being a recording contract with
EMI.
Before that, they had built up a loyal following in their native
state of Washington, self-releasing the respectable
Arrival
album in 1980.
The EMI deal ultimately didn't amount to much (a single 4-song EP
that apparently didn't impress EMI enough to re-sign them),
but it's still a noteworthy achievement.
The band has released the odd album over the years, including
a twentieth-year anniversary re-release of
Arrival.
