Riverside came together in 2001 when several players
on the Polish scene found they had a common
love for progressive metal (while Poland has no
shortage of great metal bands, few well-known
Polish bands play traditional
and have gone on to carve a successful career.
This is a perfect example of a band who draws from
several familiar influences in the prog rock/metal
Porcupine Tree and
Pain Of Salvation
are often mentioned by others as well),
yet somehow avoid simply rehashing old ideas.
Excellent musicianship abounds here, though
this is not a band to overwhelm with overly flashy
soloing or complex time changes, as this is a more
relaxed form of progressive metal.
Mariusz Duda's vocals are spot-on -- clear and
melodic without going for high-pitched wails,
and he's not afraid to let loose a punctuated
roar now and again.
Riverside is an elegant
and inspiring progressive rock/metal band,
highly recommended for fans of the genre.
