Spellcaster
Oregon's Spellcaster formed in 2009 and managed three albums and an EP
during a nine-year run.
Remarkably, the two albums reviewed here, 2011's
Under The Spell and their 2016 swansong
Night Hides The World may as well have been recorded by two different
bands, as the styles differ quite a bit (the lineup changes may
be partially responsible for that).
Under The Spell is clearly rooted in thrash, with some traditional
metal tendencies, while
Night drops the thrash altogether and ups
the Maiden-isms and 80's American power metal influences.
Perhaps this dichotomy led to the band's premature demise, as the albums
got some good reviews and it seemed they had more to offer.
Two bands with overlapping membership emerged from the ashes in
Unto Others
and
Silver Talon
and interestingly, neither sound like either Spellcaster incarnation.
