The Thirteenth Sun
The Thirteenth Sun hails from Romania, and in fact their home city
is in the heart of Transylvania.
The band doesn't pander to the pop culture stereotypes
associated with that region, but instead go in a completely different
direction, to great effect.
Stardust, released in 2016, is a rich, moody, dark slice of
spacey progressive metal, full of emotion and class, and paradoxically
sounding both original and familiar.
The musicianship is top-notch, but the songs don't allow for
technical wizardry, and the mood rings true to modern progressive metal
yet never strays too far into melodic poppy territory.
The album was released to excellent reviews but without much fanfare,
and three years later these guys still are under the radar, which
is unfortunate --
Stardust is a must for prog metal fans.
