Captain Beyond
Captain Beyond was one of the those bands often referred to as
metal pioneers, making their noise back in the early 70's when
metal was still in its infancy.
Led by original
Deep Purple
vocalist Rod Evans and also featuring a pair from the 60's
acid rockers Iron Butterfly,
the self-titled 1972 debut
Captain Beyond
was indeed pretty heavy for its day, combining progressive rock
and a bit of psychedelia with the beginnings of heavy power chords,
resulting in a style a bit like contemporary hard rockers
Sir Lord Baltimore.
One of the best albums of its era, the band's versatility shined
here.
The band managed a second album
Sufficiently Breathless a
year later, and Evans left soon afterward.
A less-well received third album,
Dawn Explosion, surfaced
four years later in 1977, and the band folded for good soon
afterward.
