Category 7
It's been said frequently on this site (recently when reviewing
Metal Allegiance)
that the term "supergroup" is often misused.
But just look at the bands these guys have played
(and are stilling playing) for --
seemingly every major American thrash or thrash-adjacent band
is represented here, so if any band can claim the crown of
thrash supergroup, it's got to be Category 7.
And if you throw all of those bands in a melting pot,
the result is pretty much what
Category 7 sounds like,
as there are plenty of thrash elements (though this is not really
a thrash record, and certainly not a retro one), lots of impressive
soloing, typically forceful vocals from the always reliable
John Bush, and a truly hyperactive drum performance from Jason
Bittner, who's simply all over the place.
Is there room for improvement?
Sure, the various influences blend a bit too much, resulting
in a somewhat safe (songwriting-wise) album, as there really
isn't a unique metal vision here.
If this project continues (supergroups usually aren't in it for the
long haul, but who knows here) the guys may be able to harness
their influences and up the originality quotient.
For now,
Category 7 stands as a fine thrash-ish modern metal record.
