Christian Mistress
Washington's own Christian Mistress burst onto the scene in 2010
with
Agony & Opium, six tracks of crackling, strongly NWOBHM-influenced
traditional metal,
sounding both fresh and retro at the same time.
Thanks to some underground buzz (apparently Fenriz of
Darkthrone
had a hand in this)
Relapse
Records signed the band (an interesting choice for a label more into
extreme metal) and two more albums have since been released.
The 70s/80s influences are all over the place, with plenty of harmonized
leads and nice riffing, and the unique vocals of Christine Davis are the
icing on the cake -- she's neither angelic nor gutteral, but her clear
vocals complement the music perfectly.
Nothing really fancy here, but the band scores major points for simply
doing classic metal right.
