Deadsoul Tribe

Deadsoul Tribe was the band led by one Devon Graves, former vocalist for Psychotic Waltz (back then he went by the name Buddy Lackey). Their style fit squarely in the progressive metal camp, but with a decidedly more original feel than a lot of the bands in that camp. There are faint traces of latter-period PW here, but in general Graves went for a darker, more laidback approach, leaving behind much of the technical showmanship that other prog metal bands frequently engage in. Graves' vocals were, as one would expect, in top form -- always a distinctively fine vocalist in PW, he showed a wider range here, really an outstanding performance. Though frequently a bit under the radar, this is a band worth investigating. The group split up in 2009, with Graves briefly moving on to a project called The Shadow Theory, and as of this writing (May 2012) is back in the reactivated Psychotic Waltz.
