Death Penalty

Death Penalty was (1) named after the classic Witchfinder General album, and (2) formed by former Cathedral guitarist Gaz Jennings, and while those two facts might give a fair impression of what this band is all about, they don't tell the whole story. Sure, there's doom here, but Death Penalty (the album) doesn't really sound like either aforementioned band, instead often choosing a more traditional doom base or (more often) a more uptempo traditional metal style, and the wailing but forceful vocals of Michele Nocon further distance this band from the more ponderous doom bands out there. Jenning's razor-sharp riffing is effective and there's a bit more going on here than one might think on first listen. A solid effort.
