Don Caballero

Excepting the guitar-hero bands, all-instrumental groups are a rarity in the rock/metal world, and those that do exist are often quirky groups off in their own world. Don Caballero was precisely such a band. Throughout their career they experimented with various styles (metal only being one of many), with the result being a complex, often dissonant sound, sometimes likened to the term "math rock". Hard to pinpoint, not an immediate listen, but pretty interesting -- there really isn't any other band that sounds much like this. The band initially broke up in 2001, with drummer Damon Che resurrecting the name two years later by recruiting members from a Pittsburgh group called Creta Bourzia. That version lasted until 2009, after which the band stopped activities although no formal disbandment announcement was made.
