Nokturnal Mortum

One of the few Ukrainian bands with a worldwide presence, Nokturnal Mortum have been perfecting their unique brand of folk/pagan black metal for a number of years. The root of of their style is old-school black metal, but their inventive use of folk and traditional melodies and instruments (much more prevalent than many bands who claim to do this) gives them an intriguing sound. It can be a bit jarring on first listen, with a furious harsh black metal assault interrupted by a upbeat, folky jig (there are a few instances of this on NeChrist), but somehow the band makes it work. On the negative side, the band is apparently associated with the NSBM movement, leading to some controversial and/or objectional lyrics and philosophies. Nevertheless, when judging the music alone, Nokturnal Mortum deserve credit for their original take on black metal.
