Oceans Of Sadness

In a time where many bands choose a genre and doggedly stay within the bounds of that genre, a band like Oceans Of Sadness is a welcome change. This Belgian act formed in 1995 and put out five albums during their fifteen-year career, the last being 2008's The Arrogance Of Ignorance. Their style was quite hard to pinpoint, with influences galore -- part prog, part blackened death, and part gothic, with vocals effectively covering all three genres, Arrogance is a sprawling, impressive work, with songs having distinct identities rather than running together like so many bands these days. Opeth is frequently named as a comparison band, but it's more that Oceans are in the same neighborhood as Opeth, not that they really sound that much alike. This band was truly the sum of its many influences, forging a sound unique yet not wholly unfamiliar. They announced their amicable breakup in February 2011.
